Legacies

A legacy is a wonderful way to support a charity of your choice. Almost £2 billion was gifted to UK charities in 2009!

Once you have considered your friends and family please consider leaving a gift to the Awareness Foundation.

How to leave a legacy to the Awareness Foundation

  1. Choose a suitably qualified person to draw up your will; this person might be your solicitor, a professional will writer, or another professional - for instance, many banks offer a free service to their customers.
  2. Work out your assets and any likely debts; this will give you a clear picture of your final estate's value.
  3. Plan who you'll remember! When writing a Will it is important to make sure your loved ones are taken care of. After providing for family and friends, you may wish to leave a legacy to the Awareness Foundation – a contribution that could help foster community harmony and peaceful co-existence. If you intend a particular charity to benefit from your estate, you should consider explaining why this is the case to avoid any misunderstanding after your death.
  4. Choose an executor or Trustee
  5. Let us know! If you have left or are considering leaving a legacy to the Awareness Foundation then please let us know. By letting us know your intentions, we can thank you properly. It also enables us to plan ahead with confidence. We should need to know your details (including your address) and your intentions (what type of legacy you plan to give us)

Leaving a legacy to the Awareness Foundation?

It is important that the following clause is included in your Will, whichever wording you need to use:

"If at my death any charity named as a beneficiary in this Will or any Codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body then my executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in its changed name or (in the second place) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made."

Please remember to use our full name Awareness Foundation, our registered charity number 1099873 and the correct address:

Choosing the type of legacy

There are several different types of legacy and choosing how to make your gift is an important decision. Consider each option carefully and select the one that’s right for you.

1. Residuary bequest (a proportion of your estate)

This is a gift of the remainder or a part of your estate after all other legacies have been made and debts cleared. Residuary legacies keep up with inflation and are an effective way to divide the value of an estate between a number of people and causes that are important to you. If you are considering what type of legacy to leave the Awareness Foundation, a residuary legacy can help your gift go further.

Suggested wording:

"I give (%) of the residue of my real and personal estate which I can dispose of by Will in any manner I think proper to the Awareness Foundation (Registered Charity No. 1099873) of  Studio 3, Liscartan House, 127-131 Sloane Street LONDON SW1X 9AS and the receipt of the Chair of the Board of Trustees or the proper officer for the time being of the Awareness Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my executors."

2. Pecuniary bequest (a set sum)

This is a gift of a fixed sum of money. The value of pecuniary legacies will decrease over time due to inflation.

Suggested wording:

"I give the sum of ...... pounds to the Awareness Foundation (Registered Charity No. 1099873) of Studio 3, Liscartan House, 127-131 Sloane Street LONDON SW1X 9AS and the receipt of the Chair of the Board of Trustees or other proper officer for the time being of the Awareness Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my executors."

3. Specific legacy bequest (a named item)

This is appropriate when a particular named item left as a gift to a beneficiary in your will, such as a painting.

Suggested wording:

"I give to the Awareness Foundation (registered charity number 1099873) of Studio 3, Liscartan House, 127-131 Sloane Street LONDON SW1X 9AS absolutely, my (name and description of item)."

4. Reversionary legacies / Life interest trusts

This is a gift from which someone can benefit in their lifetime. For example, your house could be left for the use of a relative. When they die it could pass to someone else, or to a charity.

Suggested wording:

"My trustees shall hold […] on trust for […] during his lifetime and, following his death, hold the capital and income for the Awareness Foundation (Registered Charity No. 1099873) of Studio 3, Liscartan House, 127-131 Sloane Street LONDON SW1X 9AS and the receipt of the Chair of the Board of Trustees or other proper officer for the time being of the Awareness Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my trustees …"

If you are not sure which type of legacy to leave the Awareness Foundation then please consider a residuary legacy. Residuary legacies retain their value because they follow inflation and are based on a portion of your estate rather than a set amount of money.
